What moves the number
- Rescue and legacy work carries a premium — the client is already burned and buying certainty.
- AI in the toolchain raises rates, not lowers them — clients pay for shipping speed plus accountability.
- Stack scarcity matters less than outcome ownership. "I'll own your checkout working" beats a framework list.
- Retained development ($2,000–$8,000/mo) beats hourly for both sides after the first project.
The spread between the bottom and the top of these bands is wider in development than in any other freelance discipline, and very little of it is explained by years of experience.
What explains it is whether the client is buying implementation or outcome. A developer who is handed a spec and asked to build it is priced against everyone else who could build that spec. A developer who owns “the checkout works” is priced against the cost of it not working.
